I was in my mid-thirties, relatively successful and well-respected in my corporate retail career, recently married to a great guy… but something was not quite right. I was working long days, drinking and eating too much and not exercising — living a very unhealthy lifestyle.

Although I was confident in my career and had a husband who loved me unconditionally, I didn’t feel good about myself and I wasn’t doing anything about it either. We’d also been trying to get pregnant, and that was taking much longer than anticipated, greatly adding to my stress level.

It was time for a big lifestyle reset, but it took me a while to come to that realization. I was lucky enough to have a very supportive husband/partner, as well as a boss who I considered a close friend. I finally confided my unhappiness in both of them, and they encouraged me to shift my focus 100 percent to me, instead of trying to do it all. To focus on taking care of myself, my health and be my own number one/BAE.

In order to reset my lifestyle focus, my priorities and my health, I decided to quit my job, cut back on unhealthy food and alcohol and take up yoga and exercise again. It was like a weight had been lifted. And just weeks later, we conceived our first baby.

It’s been almost four years now and I’m currently a stay-at-home mom of two. I do miss the fast pace challenges and glamour of my old job, as well as the everyday camaraderie of like-minded colleagues. But I get to spend my days with my beautiful babies, watching them learn and grow, which is beyond exhausting in a very different way. I completely respect mothers who maintain their full-time careers (and recognize some of them don’t have a choice but to work), but I couldn’t imagine being away from my children all day long (and potentially missing major milestones). I know that I’ll never get this time back with them and I feel so fortunate.

Who knows, maybe a perfect career opportunity will arise down the road, but for now, this is my focus and I couldn’t be happier.
